The inaugural Clayton Cup was contested this past weekend at the Neuse Golf Club. The team from Riverwood Golf Club captured victory with a final score of 26-16 in this Ryder Cup style format. It featured matches between 56 members of Riverwood Golf Club and the Neuse Golf Club. The event was conceptualized by Todd St. Clair with JD Mann. Captain St. Clair explains, “This was an idea I came up with a few years ago to create some friendly competition with a rival course in Clayton. It took life last winter when I was speaking with a Neuse member and planning started soon after.” Day 1, Saturday, consisted of a relaxed 9-hole 2-man scramble followed by a social gathering. Day 2, Sunday, was the main event with a 10am shotgun start. There were 3 separate matches being played within each foursome, all matches being worth 1 point. There were 2 individual matches and a fourball match in each group. The team from Riverwood played very well, easily clinching victory in the inaugural event. Said Captain Mann, “It was a lot of fun putting together and hopefully we’ve started something that everyone looks forward to each year.” Special thanks to St. Clair and Mann on their hard work as well as the Neuse Golf Club staff and it’s competitors for a great weekend.
